Description:
The exterior of the Whitworth Hall; taken at ground level from the eastern side of Oxford Road near to the junction with Dover Street the shot is angled north west towards the corner of Oxford Road and Burlington Street. It shows the still new Whitworth Hall the stone of which hasn't yet darkened to the same extent as the older University buildings to the north. In the foreground on the site that first the old Students Union would occupy and then following its demolition the Refectory are a number of advertisements and posters for a diverse range of events and products. These include a carnival featuring motor cars; some animated pictures at the Grand and something entitled “What is socialism”. There is a single tree planted on the pavement just in front of these bill boards and running down the cobbled expanse of Oxford Road tram tracks with cables suspended above them. In the distance a horse drawn buggy can be seen travelling towards the photographer.
